SIVASAGAR: A senior citizen of Sivasagar town was killed while a motorcyclist was injured when the later hit the man on Friday. The deceased was identified as Ratan Saikia, a prominent social worker and retired ONGC official of Sivasagar town.

The accident took place at West Jamuna Road in Sivasagar on Friday evening when Saikia was on his way to home on foot after attending a meeting at Sivasagar Yuvadal. A high-speeding scooty rider hit Saikia from behind. As a result, Saikia suffered serious injuries on the head. Soon after the accident, Saikia was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Saikia was 62 years old at the time of his death and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter along with a large family.

Saikia’s death has sent shockwaves across the town. Hundreds of organizations including Sibsagar Press Club, Sivasagar Yuvadal, Sivasagar Senior Citizens’ Sanmilan, Rangpur Xahitya Xabha, Temple Development Committee, Dikhowporia Sanmilita Yuva Sangha and individuals deeply mourned the demise of Saikia.

Saikia was associated with various organizations. He was the president of the Central Committee of the Assam Kaivarta Sanmilan, president of Dikhowporia Sanmilita Yuva Sangha, former secretary of the Sivasagar Yuvadal, former secretary of the Sivasagar Temple Development Committee, former working president of the Cultural Festival of the Cultural Mahasabha of Sivasagar district and president of the Daikalangia Gaon Barnamghar Unnayan Samiti.

Saikia was cremated at Shantivan Ashram at Thanaghat in Sivasagar on Saturday afternoon in presence of hundreds of people.
