SIVASAGAR, June 24: Amidst mellifluous songs and captivating dance and orchestral performances, Sivasagar paid tribute to Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha on his 19th death anniversary recently. The event was organized jointly by Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha Smriti Rakhya Samiti and Sibsagar Natya Samaj at Sibsagar Natya Mandir.
The event began with the lighting of the lamp followed by floral tributes at the portrait of the great writer, poet, orator, litterateur, lyricist, dramatist, composer, sportsman and leader of the masses by Dispur MLA Atul Bora, wife of Parag Chaliha, Dipali Chaliha and other dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion, Atul Bora said that Seuj Konwar was a multi-faceted personality whose identity could be felt in every sphere of life. “Seuj Konwar had immense contribution in every field who had also put his tireless effort to make the young generation a valuable human resource,” said Bora.
He also said that Chaliha’s sense of responsibility to the society was revealed in all his activities. “One can see Seuj Konwar’s contributions in the form of Seujia Samaj Sangeet Mahavidyalay, Sibsagar Natya Mandir, Sibsagar College and the recently constructed Chau-Lung Syukafa Indoor Stadium which got inaugurated on March 19, 2017,” added the Dispur MLA.
Speaking briefly about Seuj Konwar’s political career, Bora said, “Parag Chaliha was a master politician. By virtue of his political knowledge and leadership, AGP could stand strong and rise.”
State Agriculture Minister and AGP president Atul Bora also graced the occasion and offered floral tribute to the former president of the regional party. It was followed by a colourful cultural programme featuring musical compositions of the Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha.
Children of ‘Mou Mel’ also paid their homage to the cultural icon by dancing to the tunes of Seuj Konwar’s composition Puhor Bichari Jao. The senior and leading citizens of Sivasagar also paid their respect to Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha with a presentation of chorus.
On the occasion, five poor but meritorious students who passed the recent HSLC examination with flying colours, were honoured with the Parag Chaliha Memorial Scholarship Award that include cash and a certificate. The programme was anchored by Parag Chaliha’s younger son Saurav Chaliha, Arup Narayan Sharma and Brojen Bora. Earlier in the morning, tributes were also paid at Seuj Konwar’s dream project Chau-Lung Syukapha Indoor Stadium by garlanding Seuj Konwar’s bust and lighting lamps by Dispur MLA Atul Bora.
Saurav Chaliha, younger son of Seuj Konwar, expressed his gratitude to the well-wishers and the audience for attending his father’s death anniversary in large numbers for the last 18 years.
