Tamulpur: Severe soil erosion by the River Balti has created havoc in many villages under Tamulpur subdivision in the district of Baksa. Soil erosion is posing serious threat to agriculture land and houses in the villages Sahpur, Matigaon, Siddhinathpur, Kusumjuli, Narayanpur, No. 1 Dongargaon and many riverine villages. Due to heavy rain in the past few days, erosion has taken a serious turn in several villages under Nagrijuli Development Block in Tamulpur subdivision of Baksa district. Numbers of houses have been washed away by the overflowing water of River Balti. The local people have expressed apprehension that if erosion continues in the same rate, several bighas of agriculture land and many houses of poor families, which are only 40-50 metres away from the riverbank, are likely to go in the womb of the River Balti.

The Paharpur-Guwabari road has been washed away by the recent flood of Balti River and communication of the area has been disrupted. Local people alleged that authorities concerned have not paid any attention to solve the erosion problem and also not taken any preventive measure for this. The local people alleged that the people’s representatives were not showing any interest in solving the erosion problem. In the Sahpur village, villagers are trying to prevent soil erosion of Balti River by making bamboo porcupines.
