SI Paper Leak Case: Assam police gathers more evidence against absconding former DIG

Guwahati: Amid the ongoing investigation into an alleged job scam in Assam after the leak of Sub-Inspector exam question papers, the police seem to have found more damning evidence against former DIG PK Dutta, the main accused in the case. Dutta has been on the run since Wednesday.

Today, a team of police raided PK Dutta's under-construction Bhargav Residency hotel at the Jiban Phukan Nagar in Dibrugarh. Dutta had reportedly visited the hotel's construction site a few days ago, said reports.

In Upper Assam's Dibrugarh district, the former top cop is believed to own around 110 bighas of land. The total cost of this land is expected to be in the crores.

In Guwahati, the former police officer is believed to own as many as 5 hotels -- including the 'Bhargav Grand' near the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). He owns another hotel in the Lakhra locality.

Dutta's bungalow in Hengerabari was also raided by a team of police, where they recovered 8 kgs of gold, estimated to be worth more than Rs. 3 crores. Incriminating documents, and bank details of the absconding DIG have also been seized, reports said.

All the evidence seems to point to Dutta, who played a key role in the anti-ULFA operations in the 1990s. His immense wealth has made him the key suspect in the alleged "job scam" for the recruitment of SIs into Assam police.

Meanwhile, there have been reports that an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader is also hand in glove with the culprits, although the regional party has denied the allegations.

It is pertinent to mention here that an alleged scam came to light after the SI question paper was leaked before the exam, scheduled to be held on September 20. The exams were halted, leading to the massive uproar by the regional student bodies. A total of 597 posts for the unarmed branch of Assam Police were to be filled through this exam.

After the leak came to light, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the Director-General of Police (DGP) to conduct a probe into the matter and bring the culprits to book.
