Sikkim: BRO Rescues Stuck Passenger Vehicle
GANGTOK: A tourist vehicle with passengers inside it was successfully rescued by the members of the Border Roads organisation. The vehicle along with the people inside was almost washed away by a torrent of water rendering it impossible to drive and the people to escape the vehicle.
Parts of Sikkim have been experiencing very heavy rains in the past few days. Reportedly a part of the road was washed away by the rain. A small waterfall next to the road connecting Singtam to Dikchu became dangerous because of the increase in the amount of water.
A statement from the Border Roads Organisation mentioned that a Mahindra Bolero vehicle with five people inside, including the driver was almost washed away while trying to navigate through the waterfall. The incident took place at around 3:30 AM. Some rocks prevented the vehicle and the passengers inside the same from falling over into the gorge on the other side.
Immediate action was initiated by a team from the Border Roads Organisation, and they arrived at the venue of the incident with heavy machinery. The team was able to successfully rescue the four passengers as well as the driver from the vehicle. They also managed to pull the vehicle from the debris and prevent it from falling into the gorge.
Officials from the Border Roads Organisation mentioned that the whole rescue operation took more than an hour and was completed by around 5:30 AM.
This is not the first time that passengers were stuck in such perilous situations in the region. Sudden landslides are common in the region, especially during the monsoons and sometimes even the roads are washed off in such incidents. These incidents lead to both tourists and local people being cut off from the rest of the world till the roads are cleared of debris and vehicle can continue ahead.
