SILCHAR: In a bizarre development, two inmates serving life imprisonment managed to break out of the Silchar Central Jail in the wee hours of Thursday. The duo managed to escape by digging a tunnel through the toilet inside their cell.

Assam Police is still on the lookout for the criminals who were convicted for different murder incidents. The identities of the criminals were revealed to be Hifzur Rahman and Deep Nunia, both belonging to the Barak Valley region of the state.

Hafizur Rahman was one of the 6 accused of the murder of Ahrar Ahmed alias Naz in 2011. The incident triggered huge protests on the streets of Bhanga and Badarpur leading to the imposition of Section 144 of CrPC. The court had held Selim Ahmed, Hifzur Rahman, Rajani Talukdar, Sultan Ahmed, Hussain Ahmed and Raju Ahmed guilty for this murder and their involvement in several crimes including kidnapping, car theft and dacoity in the valley and sentenced them to life imprisonment in 2013.

Deep Nunia was arrested on the charges of killing his partner, a suspected thief, and disposing of the dead boy in a septic tank in his residence. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment by a Court.

Hafizur Rahman was shifted to the Silchar Central Jail three months back and was allotted the same cell as Deep Nunia and it is being speculated that they were plotting this jailbreak since then.

Meanwhile, the jailbreak incident has raised several questions regarding the security measures in this correctional facility which houses several dreaded criminals convicted of various crimes. Key officers of the police and administration including Deputy Commissioner of Chachar Rohan Kumar Jha and Superintendent of Police in Cachar Numal Mahatta rushed to the Silchar Central Jail to take stock of the situation. A search operation was also initiated to nab the escaped convicts.
