TEZPUR: Different organizations remembered Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala by observing the 72nd death anniversary of the Assamese cultural icon here on Tuesday. The Tezpur chapter of apex literary body Axam Xahitya Xabha organized a tribute programme as part of Silpi Divas at the Tezpur Xahitya Xabha Bhavan.

The programme started with the lighting of the earthen lamp by Ramesh Chandra Kalita, president, Tezpur Xahitya Xabha, and it was followed by floral tributes to the Rupkonwar by artiste Ajit Das, Kalpana Kalita, social worker Kalpana Baruah, Bhabananda Das, among others.

Addressing the gathering, Dwijen Nath, secretary of Tezpur Xahitya Xabha observed that Jyotiprasad Agarwala's actual artistic and political journey began after 1930. He dedicated himself fully to the freedom movement and was even jailed for 15 months and was imposed fine of Rs 500 for his active involvement in the freedom movement. But he parallelly worked on the art and cultural front and also for the uplift of the Assamese society.

The historic Baan Theatre family also organized felicitation and commemorative programmes. Tezpur University community also paid homage to Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, the cultural icon of Assam on his death anniversary, celebrated in the State as Silpi Divas. The University members offered floral tribute in the morning to the statue of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala in front of the Administrative Building.

A cultural programme was also organized during the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya, Vice Chancellor (Acting), discussed the creative works of the great personality. He said that Jyoti Prasad was a noted playwright, songwriter, poet, writer and film-maker and his contribution to Assamese society was immense.

Apart from the Vice Chancellor, Professor Manabendra Mandal, Dean, Students Welfare, Dr Nabin Sarmah and Dr Juri Gogoi Konwar, Associate Dean, Students' Welfare, hosts of other University officials were present on the occasion.
