SIVASAGAR: A review meeting on child marriage, under the aegis of Sivasagar district administration, was held at the conference hall of Amgoorie Tea Estate on Wednesday.
Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav reviewed the works of Gram Panchayat Secretaries who have been appointed as anti-child marriage officers. In the context of the speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that in order to eradicate evil practices like child marriage from the society, all responsible persons must act selflessly.
He said that children who want to get married before reaching the legal age for marriage, should first be prevented through counselling, and emphasis should be given on informing the people about the ills of child marriage. If counselling does not work in preventing child marriage, legal measures should be taken in the next stage.
The Deputy Commissioner urged the Gram Panchayat Secretaries to inform the Block Development Officer, Revenue Circle Officer, district administration and Police Department of every child marriage.
Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Shubhrajyoti Bora gave a detailed overview of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act 2006. He also explained the physical, socio-economic and domestic violence that occurs as a side effect of child marriage.
Sivasagar Zila Parishad CEO Aswini Kumar Doley urged the Gram Panchayat Secretaries to conduct awareness meetings on child marriage and child related issues on a regular basis in panchayats and wards. In the meeting, district child protection officers explained the work being done by their offices to prevent child marriage and child related crimes. Officials from the health and education departments also commented on the efforts being made by their departments in curbing the crime.
The meeting was also attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jabed Arman, senior officers of Sivasagar police, Panchayat Secretaries of development blocks, teachers and authorities of Amgoorie Tea Estate.
