Sivasagar district administration hosts maiden bird-watching session

GAURISAGAR: The district administration of Sivasagar organized the first-ever bird-watching session at the historic Pohugarh area on Wednesday.

The unique event was organized in association with Aaranyak, a biodiversity research and conservation organization. Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Dr MS Lakshmi Priya initiated the bird watching programme as part of the tourism initiative ‘Soulful Sivasagar’.The programme was organized with a vision to develop Pohugarh as a much sought after tourist destination and to encourage bird watching in the area.

The programme was attended as by Dr Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, programme secretary of Aaranyak; Arif Hussian, manager, Rhino Research and Conservation Division, Aaranyak and Abidur Rahman, manager of birding and wildlife tours, Jungle Travels India, as subject experts. They deliberated at length on techniques of bird watching, besides giving the participants a hands-on training. They also provided special training to the tourist guides so that they could help the tourists by facilitating bird watching in the region. A good number of students and tourist guides participated in the programme.

Bird watching sessions will be frequently organized at Pohugarh area, a heaven for migratory birds during winter.
