SIVASAGAR: Along with the other 23 districts of Assam, the Sub-National Pulse Polio Immunization Campaign is also being conducted from May 28 to May 30 in Sivasagar.

The main objective of this Pulse Polio Campaign is not only to eradicate polio but also to completely eradicate the polio virus from the global environment. India was certified polio-free by WHO on March 27, 2014. However, polio is still endemic in two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Though India has been certified ‘polio-free’, the risk of wild poliovirus importation or the emergence of vaccine-derived polioviruses persists until global eradication, which highlights the need for maintaining high population immunity and sensitive surveillance in the country.

During this polio campaign, 92,313 children less than 5 years of age are targeted to be given polio drops through booths and house-to-house. Vaccine will be administered at 536 centres in the district, including health centre as well as every Anganwadi Centre, bus stand, railway station, auto stand, etc., and those who cannot go to the immunization centre will be vaccinated at their houses on May 29 and May 30, informed District Immunization Officer Dr Arundhati Bora Hazarika. Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav has appealed to the people to help protect their children from polio disease by feeding two drops of polio and to help protect the district.
