MIRZA: To mark the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, a skit was performed by young girls of Navajeevan Rehabilitation Home for Women and Girls, a rehabilitation home for trafficked, exploited, abandoned girls and women run by the NGO Assam Centre for Rural Development in Kamrup district.
Along with a street play, an awareness-cum-sensitization meeting on human trafficking was also organized by the NGO in Sikarhati Anchalik High School, Sikarhati, to generate awareness among youngsters, parents, teachers and general public.
"It is unfortunate that many people in rural parts of Assam are still not aware about human trafficking. During the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, traffickers used social media - their new modus operandi - to prey on youth, especially girls and women with the promise of jobs or better employment opportunities as the livelihoods of many people were affected during the lockdown. We recently received a case of a girl rescued by Mumbai Police, who was lured on Facebook during the pandemic and was sold to a brothel in Mumbai," said Prerna Changkakati, Executive Director, Assam Centre for Rural Development.
Assam Centre for Rural Development has been working to create more awareness on human trafficking in remote, rural areas of Assam since 2009, stated a press release.
