SILCHAR: After lull during the general election period due to tight security along the border with Manipur and equally strong vigilance in and around the Lakhipur sub division of Cachar, smugglers are again making desperate moves to be back to their business. But, equally alert is the police administration to foil their mischievous design to smuggle in drugs and contraband goods through the porous points and reach them to the pre determined selling destinations. In fact, this depends mostly on how responsive is the police force to the emerging situation, created by smugglers and anti social elements.

It was this proactive joint operation by SDPO led Lakhipur police and Banskandi Police Investigation Centre that resulted in hauling up Jahangir Ahmed Choudhury (37) of Badripar village under Silchar police station on Saturday. From his possession was recovered 20 number of soap cases, containing 237 grams of heroin valued at Rs 8 lakh. A case was registered against Jahangir at Lakhipur police station vide no. 142 (21) u/s 21 (b) Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Necessary follow up action is being initiated. The joint operation was launched on specific tip off, according to a top police officer.
