SNEAK PEEK | Akhil Gogoi & Lurinjyoti Gogoi- Key Candidates of the Newly Floated Regional Parties

GUWAHATI: Post the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam, the state witnessed a new wave in the political landscape in order to oust the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and revolt against the Act.

In this process, Assam saw two regional parties that emerged from the ashes backed by two famed faces of the state.

By the end of 2020, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi united with a few of the prominent faces of the anti-CAA movement and launched Raijor Dal to fight against the Sarbanada Sonowal led- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam.

On the other hand students leader, Lurinjyoti Gogoi from the age-old All Assam Students' Union (AASU) turned-politician was entrusted with the responsibility of leading the new regional party, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), which aimed to espouse the rights of indigenous Assamese.

It is to be mentioned here that, although the motive of both the newly floated regional parties remains the same, both the parties, AJP and Raijor Dal is set to content in Assam's 126 constituencies.

Akhil Gogoi's profile as per the affidavit submitted to the ECI

Gogoi is contesting as an Independent candidate and his name is enrolled in No.53 Pub Guwahati Constituency, Assam, at Serial No.2O6 in Part No.166.

Meanwhile, as per the affidavit, the Total income shown in the Income Tax Return (in Rupees) for the last five Financial Years completed (as of 31d March) is said to be "NIL".

Notably, the Raijor Dal president has been jailed for more than a year from now with regards to a series of charges.

On the other hand, Lurinjyoti Gogoi's candidature profile is set to contest the assembly election from Duilajan and Naharkatia.

Lurinjyoti Gogoi's profile as per the affidavit submitted to the ECI:

Gogoi is contesting as a candidate filed by the AJP and his name is enrolled in 122 Tinkusia Constituency, Assam, at Serial No.560 in Part No.153.

Meanwhile, as per the affidavit, the Total income is shown in Income Tax Return (in Rupees) for the last five Financial Years completed (as of 31st March) is said to be Rs. 3,49,900 for the FY 2019-20 and Rs. 4,88,370 for the FY 2020-21, prior to which his income statement showed "NIL"

Further, no pending or present criminal cases are levied against the former student leader turned politician.
