Tezpur: Along with the rest of the State, in Tezpur also under the aegis of Socialist Unity Cente of India (Communist) or SUCI (C) Sonitpur District Committee also registered a strong protest against hike in fares of buses, tempo and trucks.
Sonitpur district members of SUCI (C) staged a dharna on Thursday outside the Hem Barua Hall and raised slogans against the government under the leadership of secretary of the Tezpur chapter, Ajay Acharya. The protesters said that the hike had come as a rude shock for commuters, especially at a time when the public was struggling with increase in prices of essential commodities. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many labourers had lost their jobs and were forced to go back to their native villages but now, when they want to come back to revive their livelihood, they find themselves helplessly tackling the abnormal fare hike. A few commuters said that the bus, Magic, tempo and e-rickshaw fares had been increased while fares of long-distance buses had shot up by 50 per cent.
