Socio-Educational Welfare Association holds meeting on protection of child rights in Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh: Socio-Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) organized a meeting revolving around protection of child rights on Tuesday. Director of SEWA, Arfan Hussain, in his speech, highlighted significant aspects related to the subject matter including Integrated Child Protection Scheme, Juvenile Justice (care and protection) Act, Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The event was attended by many office bearers of District Child Protection Unit, Child Welfare Committees, Juvenile Justice Boards, Anti-Human Trafficking Units, Special Juvenile Police Units Labour Department, Childline and tea-producing companies and District Social Welfare Officer.

President of Socio-Educational Welfare Association and retired Air Marshal, Anjan Kumar Gogoi, in his speech, underscored relevant areas, including child rights, and the need for having nutritious meal and education. Senior journalist Sanjay Roy gave a detailed account on child rights. Senior journalist of The Sentinel, Ikbal Ahmed spoke on the role of NGOs, civil society and media in protecting child rights. To check incidents of children being employed as labourers in residences, he suggested that all recruitment of helpers and maids be made through a formal channel, which would help keep a proper record of the same.

Assistant Professor of the Department of Mass Communication, Dibrugarh University, Kanta Kaveri Sonowal highlighted the role of media in reporting children-centric news through a power-point presentation. Representing District Child Protection Unit, Rashmirekha Bharali spoke on the legalities and provisions of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act.
