DIBRUGARH: Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA), a Dibrugarh-based NGO, provided capacity-building support to key officials of a non-government agency (YCP) in Indonesia to address gender-based violence in the palm oil sector.
A training of trainers (TOT) was held at the office of Yayasan Care in the capital city of Jakarta from May 2 to May 5 where Arfan Hussain, Vice President of SEWA, delivered the capacity-building training. SEWA, through its gender initiative, facilitates ensuring that women can act on the choices they make and are better protected from harassment. Under SEWA’s gender programme implemented in Assam tea plantations, more equitable relationships and attitudes among women and men in the Assam tea industry have been developed, which ultimately helps prevent violence in the workplace and in intimate relationships. The programme also develops positive working relationships, and empowered workers will contribute to higher productivity and sustainable supply chains. SEWA also provides mental health training by promoting barefoot counselling skills in the tea estates of Assam. The methodology and approach adopted by SEWA to address gender equality are getting recognition, and the same want to be replicated in the palm oil sector of Indonesia by their local gender programme implementing agency.
