TEZPUR: In view of the rising number of road accident cases in the State, especially in Sonitpur district, the Sonitpur district administration in a joint venture with Sonitpur Police, Transport and other line departments concerned has decided to take up stringent measures to curb road accidents and reduce the number of death cases due to accidents in the district. This was informed by Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra in a joint press meet held on Thursday at the new conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner's office in the presence of SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma, ADC Romy Baruah, Additional SP Madhurima Das and heads of various departments.

Talking to media persons, the Deputy Commissioner informed that strict vigilance will be kept in all picnic spots during the upcoming festive season, with strict checking for helmets for two-wheeler riders and drunken driving cases. If a driver of any vehicle is found to be in an inebriated/ drunken state, the group of people will have to switch drivers or arrange for an alternate driver.

The Deputy Commissioner further said the administration will take all necessary steps to install road signage, reflectors where required without further delay. Also, speed breakers and rumble strips will be installed at those locations where accidents had taken place due to overspeeding.

All line departments concerned will be pressed into action to do the needful to prevent road accidents during this upcoming festive season, he said, adding that check posts will be set up at specific locations in the district, where joint checking by police, transport and magistrates will be carried out daily. Also, the Excise department officials have been directed to intensify raids against illicit liquor during this period.

Also, to curb the menace of e-rickshaws in the district, plans are being made to regulate their movement on the main roads and any e-rickshaw found plying on the National Highway will be confiscated.

Speaking to the media, SP Sushanta Biswa Sarma said that to measure the speed of vehicles on the National Highway, speed guns have been installed in four locations of the district on the Highway and that strict action will be taken against all those violating road safety guidelines.

Earlier in the day, a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held in the presence of all Circle Officers and OCs and ICs of various Police Stations and Out Posts where accident spots of the district were reviewed in details and necessary suggestions taken from the respective officers.
