TEZPUR: In connection with the International Year of Millet, Sonitpur District Agriculture Department and APART organized a ‘Millet month’ in three Agricultural Development Circles in the Sonitpur district to raise awareness about millet cultivation and encourage farmers, students and parents about the benefits of millet in food.

From June 4, two awareness meetings were held at Bapubheti Primary School, Puthimari, Pungpani Primary School and today concluded at Bhojkhowa Primary School, Dolabari Gaon Panchayat under Depota Agricultural Development Circle.

The awareness meetings were titled ‘Farmers for Millet in Assam’ and ‘Millet for School Children in Assam’ and the use of millet in food was explained in detail by District Agriculture Officer Pankaj Kumar Saikia. The program was conducted by Senior Agricultural Development Officer and District Nodal Officer of Millet Mission Pranab Bora. The awareness programme also distributed rice made from millet and balanced meals among the students.

The awareness program was attended by District Media Expert, Bitopan Shaikia, Millet Extension Executive, Bidisha Bora, teachers of the schools and farmers of the area. In addition, an awareness meeting was organized by Jhaljhala, a voluntary organization, in collaboration with the District Agriculture Department, at Usha Natya Mandir, Tezpur Deka village.
