GUWAHATI: The Bhartiya Janata Party BJP today released its party manifesto- "Sankalpa Patra", wherein it has pledged to bring in a corrected NRC to secure and protect Assam. While releasing the party manifesto, National BJP President JP Nadda stated, "We are committed to bringing in a corrected National Register of Citizens NRC to secure and protect Assam…We will protect genuine Indian citizens and detect illegal infiltrators so that Assam can remain Assam's."

Speaking on the same lines, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that BJP will not allow any "illegal migrant in the state", hence an error-free NRC will be the priority of the government as soon as it retains power in the state. He further claimed that the present list is "full of errors and cannot be accepted", as such there is the need of bringing in an error-free NRC and ensure that no illegal migrant is staying in the state.

As per reports, on being asked about the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 (CAA), Sonowal asserted that CAA being a central act will be implemented.

The final NRC which was published in August 2019, excluded a total of 19 lakh people from the list. However, the Sonowal led BJP government alleged that the NRC is flawed and hence not acceptable. The party further demanded the re-verification of the NRC data. As of now the list remains hanged, with those excluded not yet issued rejection orders with which they can appeal at the state's Foreigners' Tribunals (FTs).

It needs to be mentioned here that the contentious CAA founds no mention in the manifesto released today. Interestingly, the tall leaders of BJP are promising to implement the same in the neighbouring state of West Bengal which is also going to polls.

In 2019, soon after the passing of the Act, the state has witnessed a massive protest, that later amplified to other parts of the nation including the national capital.

The BJP leaders refrained from speaking about CAA in this part of the country during the election campaigning while stating it as a 'non-factor' in the ensuing elections.

Of late, they are confirming that the Act will be implemented, both the National President Nadda and State President Ranjeet Kumar Dass of BJP already confirmed the same.
