Sootea Divas observed in memory of the freedom fighters

JAMUGURIHAT: Sootea Divas have been observed in memory of the freedom fighters who dared to hoist the tri-colour in the Sootea police station premises on August 20, 1942, lowering the Union Jack peacefully. Sootea police station is the first police station where the tricolour was unfurled for the first time in India. To commemorate the golden day, Sootea Divas have been observed with grandeur since 2022. The special day, organised by the Sootea Town Committee in association with the general public of the greater Sootea, began with the hoisting of the national flag at the Sootea police station (old) premises by Shubhasish Barua, Superintendent of Police, Biswanath. Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika offered Swahid Tarpan. An open session was held at Natya Mandir, Sootea.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Bora, head of the department of geography at Gauhati University, graced the open session as an appointed speaker. During his address, Dr. Bora traced the golden history of Sootea in the freedom movement and recalled the contributions of the freedom fighters of the greater Sootea area. MLA Padma Hazarika thanked former CM Sarbananda Sonowal for recognising Sootea PS as a heritage site and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for spreading the history of the police station in a national forum. The session was also addressed by Shub-hasish Barua, Superintendent of Police, Biswanath, Dhrubajyoti Das, ADC, Biswanath, among others.
