Special Court of NIA sends Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi to 10 day NIA remand

Guwahati: Peasant leader Akhil Gogoi was sent to 10 day National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody by a special court of NIA on Tuesday in Guwahati.

The KMSS leader was booked under Section 120(B), 124(A), 153(A), 153(B) of the IPC and Section 18, 39 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Gogoi was arrested by the Assam Police on December 12 from Jorhat and later handed over to the National Investigation Agency.

Amid tight security, the NIA had produced Akhil Gogoi before the special court which sent him to the 10-day NIA custody.

Meanwhile, the court directed the NIA to ensure regular medical checkups of Akhil Gogoi and allow his family members and lawyers to meet him.

Speaking to the media, Lawyer Shantanu Borthakur said that the NIA has sought 20-day custody but the court granted the 10-day custody.

"The court also directed the NIA that, Akhil Gogoi will be subjected to medical checkups every 24 hours and allow the family members and lawyers to meet him. There will be no physical and mental torture against him," the lawyer said.

It may be mentioned that according to the Assam government, 190 people have been arrested by the Assam Police for their alleged involvement in the violent incidents during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests across the state.
