GUWAHATI: Star campaigners from several political parties including BJP and Congress will be campaigning in Assam today, as the campaigning for the second phase of elections slated on April 1 will end today evening.
A total of 345 candidates are in the fray in the second phase of the elections. In accordance to the Election Commission's guidelines, election campaigns have to end 48 hours prior to the polling date.
In an effort to woo voters, political parties have been addressing rallies across the state. Meanwhile leaders and star campaigners have lined up the state. BJP President JP Nadda will address three rallies at Kaithalkuchi under Dharmapur constituency in Nalbari district, Bilasipara (East) in Goalpara district and at Rani under West Guwahati constituency in Kamrup (Metro) district today.
Rahul Gandhi will address two rallies and interact with the women in Silchar on the last day of campaigning for phase 2 of the assembly election. Gabdhi will also address rallies in Haflong in Dima Hasao district and Bokajan in Karbi Anglong district.
Union Minister Smriti Irani will address public meetings at Borkhetri and Dhubri followed by a press interaction in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, in Assam, CM Sarbananda Sonowal will be holding campaign rallies in several places including Dholai, Karimganj, Sonai and Silchar on the last day of campaigning for the phase 2.
The three-phased Assam Assembly Elections began on March 27. The final turnout in the first phase stands at 79.97%. In the first phase, BJP contested 39 seats meanwhile, Congress contested 43 seats of the 47 while AGP which is an ally of BJP contested in 10 of 47 seats.
The second phase of elections is scheduled to be held on April 1. A total of 39 constituencies will go to the polls in the second phase of the elections. It needs to be mentioned here that among the 39 constituencies, 15 seats belong to the crucial Barak Valley.
The third phase will be held on April 6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing a rally for the third phase of the Assam Assembly elections at Kokrajhar on April 1.
