State Bank of India (SBI) Gram Saksham launched in Naharbari, Baksa

BAKSA: A livelihood project titled “SBI Gram Saksham” was on Thursday formally inaugurated by the State Bank of India Foundation, the CSR arm of State Bank of India in partnership with the NGO, Assam Centre for Rural Development in Naharbari, Baksa. SBI Gram Saksham is aimed at empowering rural disadvantaged women by providing them with piglets, constructing pig sheds, and giving them technical training and knowledge to rear pigs in a scientific and sustainable manner. The project aims to reach out to 100 beneficiaries in the first phase, and 100 more beneficiaries in the second phase.

“Through this initiative, we want to ensure rural women in these remote areas are equipped with the scientific know-how to rear pigs which is a local practice in a safe and sustainable manner so that they can earn an income and support their families,” Arpita Sharma, Assistant Manager, State Bank of India Foundation, Mumbai said.

“Our organisation has partnered with the State Bank of India Foundation in the past successfully to implement livelihood initiatives in remote villages of Baksa and it has helped many women start their own enterprises. Through the Gram Saksham initative we will also be linking these rural women with the local banks so that they can expand their piggery units,” Prerna Changkakati, Executive Director, Assam Centre for Rural Development said.
