GUWAHATI: The State President of Bhartiya Janata Party BJP Ranjeet Dass on Monday stated that the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 will be implemented in Assam once the saffron party comes to power in the state, said reports.
Calling it an "ideological commitment of the BJP", Dass stated that there is no stepping back in regard to the implementation of the bill.
He further assured that the Act will not harm the people of the state and the rules will soon be framed, following which "it will be definitely implemented in the state," said Dass.
It needs to be mentioned with just a few days left for the Assam Assembly Election, the BJP leaders including the bigwigs from the party who have been campaigning here in Assam have refrained from mentioning the CAA.
In 2019, CAA was made law after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent. The law seeks to give citizenship status to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
Soon after the passing of the Act the state has witnessed a massive protest, that later amplified to other parts of the nation including the national capital.
Moreover, the Congress has attacked the BJP government during its election campaign over the implementation of the draconian law. The Congress party has also initiated a massive campaign against the CAA for the ensuing elections.
Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi released the party's election manifesto wherein one of the key points include bringing in a law to nullify the implementation of CAA in the state.
Taking a jibe at Gandhi, Dass asserted that the Congress leader knows nothing about CAA and that the Act will have no impact in the ensuing elections.
"The BJP state chief claimed that the CAA is not an issue in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state as people will vote logically, not emotionally. He said that they were convinced that not a single foreigner can illegally settle in Assam as long as the BJP is in power in the state," said Dass.
