State Government has failed to provide employment to unemployed youths: AAUA

The All Assam Unemployed Association (AAUA) has once again come down heavily upon the State government, alleging its failure with regard to appointing and engaging the lakhs of unemployed youths of the State as per electoral promise.

In a press communiqué, AAUA central committee president in-charge Dharmendra Deori and general secretary Jiban Rajkhowa said, “In the election campaign meetings, BJP promised that the party would engage 2 lakh unemployed youths of the State each year if it came to power. Keeping faith in this public declaration, the people of the State brought the party to power by casting large number of votes in support of the BJP candidates. But the matter of concern is that we have not seen the engagement of the unemployed youths as per the poll promise though the State Government, led by the BJP, had spent crores of fund in the name of ‘Advantage Assam’ a few months ago.”

In this regard, the organization pointed out the failure of training centres under the control of the State and Union governments with a view to ensuring engagement of the unemployed people. “The unemployed youths are not potent enough to get engagement, as expected, through these training centres. As per information found through RTI Act, 2005, only 70,967 people have got training under these training centres from 2016 to 2019 and only 81,238 youths, including trained and non-trained, have got engagement. The existing government has not paid any importance with regard to engaging the unemployed youths. Under such circumstances, the declaration made by the government is confined only to advertisements and gift of the gab,” the press communiqué further stated.

As per the RTI information, 197 youths were trained through the Secretariat of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council while 1,258 youths were trained through the Directorate of Unemployed Training and Engagement. Similarly, 336 youths through Tiwa Autonomous Council, 800 youths through Skill Employment and Entrepreneurship Department, Kokrajhar, 110 youths through Director of Horticulture and Food Processing, Khanapara, 12,007 youths through State Institute of Panchayat and Rural Development, Assam, 39,403 youths through Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM), and 80 youths through Skill Employment, Sivasagar. In total 70,967 youths were trained under these training centres.

On the other hand, 33,456 unemployed youths were engaged in work through ASRLM and 19,233 youths are working at present. Around 10,294 unemployed youths have got self-employment through State Institute of Panchayat and Rural Development, Assam while 253 youths through Tiwa Autonomous Council, 16,744 youths through Assam Skill Development Mission and 1,258 youths through Skill Employment and Entrepreneurship Department. Thus, the total figure of the youths who got employment is 81,238, as stated in the press communiqué.
