LAKHIMPUR: The State Government will establish the Bhimbor Deuri Smriti Kshetra at Sadiya covering 110 bighaarea. The State Government will undertake the aspiring step in order to endure the memory of the public leader.

This was declared by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Lakhimpur on Monday. He said so while taking part in the 73rd Bhimbor Deuri Divas organized under the aegis of the Directorate of Culture in association with the Lakhimpur district administration, Deuri Autonomous Council and All Assam Deuri Students' Union at Narayanpur HS School playground.

Notably, BhimborDeori, who breathed his last on November 30 in 1947, was a devoted freedom fighter and a noted lawyer. He was one of the main architects of the KhasiDarbar Hall Resolutions created on March 21–March 23, 1945. In these resolutions, indigenous leaders of different ethnic identities resolved to restore their independent homelands. Deori helped found the general secretary of Assam Tribal League in 1933. He worked to ensure that indigenous Assamese people be allotted land pattas. He complained on behalf of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to members into the general dining halls of universities on June 18, 1941, while criticizing improper mass literacy campaigns during the Assam Legislative Council budget session in 1943. His political acumen worked as a saviour for the greater Assamese society, especially at the time of the grouping plan. As per the grouping plan of the British Government, conspiracy was hatched to make Assam part of Pakistan.

Attending the commemoration programme as chief guest, the Chief Minister asked the students of the State to follow the noble ideologies of the freedom fighter who was also a noted educationist. In this regard, the Chief Minister appealed to the parents and guardians and the teachers to encourage the students to develop zeal in education.

"BhimborDeuri could manage to show his academic excellence overcoming many hurdles in pre-Independent India. Our students should be inspired with his dedication and devotion. At present, the State Government has implemented various packages for the welfare of the students so that they can pursue their higher education. Under such circumstances, their duty should be to study only for building a prosperous society," the Chief Minister added

Further, the Chief Minister appealed to all the Deuri community organizations of the State to extend their co-operation with regard to establishing the Bhimbor Deuri Smriti Kshetra without any discrepancy.

In addition to him, State P&RD and Cultural Affair Minister Naba Kumar Doley, Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das, former Education Minister Premadhar Borah and DAC Chief Executive Member Madhab Deuri also delivered speech commemorating the public leader in the programme. Director of Culture Vishnu Kamal Borah and Bihpuriya MLA Debananda Hazarika delivered the welcome address. The artistes of the Kundigira Art and Culture presented Deuri Bihu dance and other cultural programmes.
