LAKHIMPUR: Stir against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 continues in Lakhimpur district.

Demanding the immediate scrapping of the controversial Act, the people of larger Charaimoria area near North Lakhimpur town staged four-hour long sit-in at the Charaimoria Chariali from 4 pm to 8 pm on Sunday. The agitation programme was jointly initiated by the conscious people of the area along with with Yuva Samaj, Shilpi Samaj, Nari Samaj, and the businessmen forum.

During the demonstration, the protesters shouted various slogans demanding the scrapping of the Act and slamming the BJP-led government at the Centre for passing the Act causing a threat to the existence of the Assamese community and culture. They also flayed the State Government for supporting and advocating in favour of the Act.

Participating in the stir, vocal artistes Bhairab Borah, Gun gun Phukan, Bandana Baruah and Nijumoni Baruah Phukan presented revolutionary songs in order to register the protest of the artistes’ forum against the Act. Similarly, poet Durgeswar Hazarika, Kendriya Mahavidyalaya professor Haren Borah and retired headmaster Upen Baruah recited self-composed poetry opposing the Act.
