Storm Damages Stage During Bihu Celebrations in Nalbari

NALBARI: A raging storm caused damages in several parts of Nalbari on the night of Tuesday. Apart from damages to the property of the local people, the storm also damaged the stage of an ongoing Bihu celebration in the region.

The whole region has been suffering from an intense heat wave in the last few days mainly due to the lack of rain. Also, the rains are expected to bring down the temperature but the accompanying winds caused massive damage.

It was also the final day of the Bihu celebrations carried out in some parts of the state, including the 16th edition of the Helsa Rongali Bihu celebrated annually and the thunderstorm wreaked havoc during the celebrations.

The storm arrived during the performance of Thespian, a group from Tezpur. The performers came off the stage in the middle of their performance before the state was damaged. Heavy rains and accompanying winds caused massive damage to the stage causing it to collapse.

Priyanka Bharali and Krishnamoni Chutiya were also supposed to perform later in the night in the closing function of the Bihu celebration. But the adverse weather condition made it impossible for the events to continue. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

The organisers took the necessary action to ensure the well-being of the performers as well as the audience during and after the weather disturbance. This incident also highlights the need of proper safety measures in such public events, especially those happening during the Bihu season, which sees multiple thunderstorms every year.

Rains and winds also affected parts of Guwahati late on Tuesday night. Although the showers are not expected to bring down the temperatures, they will definitely give some temporary respite from the dusty conditions in the city prevalent in the past few days.
