TEZPUR: The 32nd National Road Safety Week programme, organized under the aegis of Sonitpur district administration, transport and police department under the theme 'Sadak Suraksha-Jeevan Raksha' got underway. The programme was inaugurated by Tezpur MLA Brindaban Goswami in presence of ADC Rohan Jha, District Transport Officer Niren Sarma, Additional SP (Security) Olindita Gogoi and other dignitaries.

Speaking to the media, District Transport Officer Niren Sarma said that during the course of the week, various activities, including processions, car rallies, street plays, eye check-up camps and drivers' training camps, will be held to bring awareness on the issue of road safety. The main target of the campaign will be the youth and student segments. Sarma also said that the department had charted out a month-long road safety programme to inform and educate people about road safety and its importance. Sarma further said that the main cause for road accidents was attributed to be behavioral, that is, a habitual flouting of traffic rules like not wearing helmet, not wearing seat belt, jumping traffic lights, over speeding and drunken driving. It is therefore needed that people are made aware of the perils of not following traffic rules, and the emotional and financial trauma that it could bring to their families

On Wednesday, a street play on road safety was held at Tezpur Court Chariali where the Tezpur Girls' Higher secondary School students enacted on various topics like wearing helmet while riding two-wheelers, not to talk on mobile while driving or riding, to slow down or stop for pedestrians when they cross the road, not to drink and drive, to buckle up while driving, to obey speed limit, to follow traffic rules always, vehicle fitness, to drive carefully, to avoid road rage and so on.
