SILCHAR: Taking care of children for their healthy growth with sound mind and body is the topmost priority of the State and it is with this objective that the health department in coordination with the district administration has geared up its task force for launching tetanus plus vaccination. In this context, a meeting was held in the conference hall of the district administrative headquarters on Saturday which was presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Health), SumitSattawan IAS, in presence of the District Development Commissioner Jessica Lalsim and Additional Deputy Commissioner Rajib Roy.

Dr S K Roy, paediatrician, S M Dev Civil Hospital, gave a detailed insight into the tetanus plus vaccination through a Power Point presentation. Sumit Sattawan asked all the health officials and functionaries to be ready for launching vaccination programme to meet the target of 68,657 children between the age group of 10 to 16 years in Cachar. Of the targeted children, 5200 fall under Bicrampore, 8459 under Borkhola, 1 0,101 under Dholai, 7627 under Jalalpur, 10,140 under Lakhipur, 11,720 under Sonai, 6854 under Udharbond and 3764 under Silchar urban BPHCs

The 20-day vaccination programme will be kicked off from Monday. Sumit Sattawan addressing the media said, "Td vaccine for tetanus and diphtheria is to start in campaign mode for three weeks. Nearly, 2700 centres have been identified for the purpose which includes anganwadi, health establishments, schools among others. The vaccine is completely safe and tested with no adverse effect." Jessica Lalsim, District Development Commissioner, is hopeful their joint efforts will make the immunisation programme a success and eradicate the disease. Dr Rajat Deb, district immunisation officer, revealed there would be in all 2652 session sites, out of which 2288 would be under regular outreach session and 33 fixed session.

Suman Choudhury, district media expert, NHM, said media has a great role in making vaccination programme successful by dispelling many a misconception and superstitious belief." An unvaccinated child remains a threat to himself and others," he pointed out. Joint Director of Health, Dr Sudip Jyoti Das, statistical investigator, universal immunisation programme, Nilanjan Gupta and media persons were also present.
