KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar police have taken strong measures against violation of safety protocol in the fight against COVID-19.

Kokrajhar traffic police has imposed fine on commuters who do not wear masks, helmets and against pillion riding on two wheelers. Rs. 500 fine is imposed on people for not wearing masks in public places, Rs 1000 for driving without helmets and Rs 2000 for pillion riding.

Kokrajhar Traffic in-charge Giasuddin Ahmed said that so far over Rs 3 lakh had been collected as penalty from people for not wearing masks, helmets and pillion riding since June. He said that Rs 1.95 lakh had been collected in June and more than Rs 1.30 lakh had been collected as penalty in July so far.

Ahmed said that despite COVID-19 cases increasing across the State, few people did not bother to wear masks and follow social distancing. He said apart from issuing fines to people, they had also created awareness about the virus and the importance of wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. "Masks have been made mandatory and is among the key safety protocol in the fight against COVID-19," he said.

Ahmed said that collecting fine was not the intention. "We want to make people realize the necessity of wearing masks and follow social distancing," he said.
