Guwahati: In an official statement, the State Transport Department has been instructed by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to come up with a new law with strict penal provisions for those who violate traffic measures.
The State Transport Department has also been encouraged by the Assam Chief Minister to work in coordination with the police and health departments so that the fatalities of road accidents are reduced.
On Friday, the Chief Minister also reviewed the status of the implementation of road safety protocols and revenue collections and the functioning of the transport department during a meeting with district officers.
According to the statement, the state department has been directed to propose new legislation that incorporates strict penal provisions for violators, and more safety enforcement measures.
The Deputy Transport Officers (DTOs) have also been instructed by the Chief Minister to conduct meetings with the police and health departments to evaluate the measures and take necessary actions.
The DTOs have been further encouraged by Himanta Biswa Sarma to create a more people-friendly environment in their offices and also to make efforts to provide 'contactless' services so that people can make use of them from their homes.
The statement also claimed that 18 services of the department are under discussion to be made online by May 10, 2022, after the state government completes one year in office.
During the meeting, the CM also launched a contactless online facility that provides learner driver's licenses and a mobile application that provides information on the fitness certificates of vehicles.
An MoU has also been exchanged with an iron and steel company a registered vehicle scrapping company.
