Student bodies criticize OIL for Baghjan blowout

TINSUKIA: A joint delegation of Tinsukia District Students' Union (AASU), AJYCP Tinsukia district committee and Sadou Mattack Yuba Chatra Sanmillan met CMD OIL Sushil Chandra Mishra on Monday at OIL HQ Duliajan and submitted a memorandum comprising 5-point charter of demands highlighting catastrophic effect following Baghjan oil field blowout.

Strongly criticizing and blaming OIL for the blowout, the student bodies demanded immediate blacklisting of outsourcing company- M/s John Energy and to stop laying of pipeline work from Madhuting to Baghjan over Maguri Beel undertaken by ACI Company.

The demands included immediate halt to continuous discharge of gas and condensate from the blowout well no 5. Besides providing adequate compensation to the affected families of Baghjan and nearby families, the OIL must ensure safety of biodiversity; the memorandum stated, adding that the OIL should also ensure improved medical and veterinary facilities to the people and livestock in the area.
