DHUBRI: Over 100 students and teachers of Assam Heritage took part in a Heritage Walk on Saturday to discover the history and heritage of Dhubri town.
This was the fourth and successful walk since World Tourism Day last year to generate awareness about the rich heritage of Dhubri town through the Heritage Trail. It was sponsored by Assam Heritage, a Senior Secondary School at Gauripur of Dhubri district.
The 2-km walk begun from the Victoria Statue Park at Tetultola and was formally inaugurated by an ardent social worker, Bimal Oswal, who in his brief speech spoke about the rich heritage and history of the town and appealed to the students not just to enjoy the walk but also become ambassadors to promote and create awareness to preserve and protect them.
The participants then moved to Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School where Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika had his primary education. Then they trailed through the history of Brahma Mandir of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Armenian Church, Gurudwara Sri Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji, Dhubri Circuit House, Dhubri Treasury, Lawn Tennis Court, Dhubri Bar Association, Dak Bungalow, DFO Bungalow, DC Bungalow, Meteorological Tower, Netai Dhubuni Ghat, Panch Peer Dargah, SP Bungalow and palatial building of Lakhipur Zamindar – all the historical and religious sites and buildings between 1662 to 1905 was narrated in detail by heritage preservation activist, Bijoy Kumar Sharma of Dhubri.
Talking to The Sentinel, Principal (in-charge) of Assam Heritage, Dhruba Mahato said that the students of his school would get a deep insight about the rich history and heritage of this town.
“Students of this generation know little about their local history which is a bad trend. Now government is encouraging the preservation and protection of the historical, religious and heritage sites to promote tourism which has become a potential industry these days,” Mahato said.
