Students In Assam Should Learn Multiple Languages: Ranoj Pegu

GUWAHATI: Ranoj Pegu, the education minister for Assam, urged the students in the state to pick up more languages so they would have an advantage in the current competitive environment.

Pegu was giving a speech on "BTR marching towards quality education—KG to PG" on the third day of the first Bodoland International Knowledge Festival, which was held by Bodoland University in Kokrajhar on Wednesday.

The government of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) actively assisted in the organisation of the festival.

"It's beneficial to learn material in one's mother tongue. Although we are helping with that, young children can benefit from learning additional languages”, said to Pegu.

In fact, children can gain an advantage by studying more languages in addition to their individual mother tongues in the competitive world of today and in a multilingual nation like India, as per the minister.

Speaking to the group during the stakeholders' workshop, which included SMC, SMDC, parents, teachers, and students, Pegu said, "You must understand, language is a skill.

He also added that learning more languages won't harm one's native speech.

"We shouldn't restrict people's ability to learn new languages. Young minds may readily pick up many languages. That comes naturally to them. They are not under any additional strain. Hence, let's adopt a cheerful outlook. The language problem shouldn't be viewed emotionally”, stated Pegu

“It's okay if I'm learning in Bodo. But learning Assamese, Hindi, and English all at once gives me an advantage and additional credentials”, he added.

Pegu believed that the mother tongue would be safe and secure in its position.

The education minister added that the government is trying to gradually convert Bodo medium high schools into higher secondary schools, beginning with the following academic year.

In the locations listed in the sixth schedule, such as BTR, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao, separate TET exams will be held for upper elementary and lower primary schools, according to Pegu.
