JORHAT: “Keeping in mind the present scenario of increasing women’s participation in the economy, this university must concentrate on introducing skill-based employment-oriented courses to nourish young minds. I believe that without economic independence, women empowerment will be impossible,” said Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi, who is also the Chancellor of Assam Women’s University, during the first convocation of the university held at the university auditorium on Tuesday.
He also stressed doing away with the contractual appointments of faculty members and going for permanent appointment in order to upgrade the university. Addressing the students, Prof Mukhi said, “Today we are celebrating the contribution of our women leaders who are committed to realizing humanity’s noblest and vital projects of sustainable development, peace, and security. I am happy to share with you that our women have demonstrated their leadership in governance, diplomacy, social supremacy, politics, and gender equality. On this occasion, I pay my reverence to those women achievers around the world who have overcome all impediments and pushed the frontiers of women’s leadership to excel in all areas of socio-economic, cultural and academic progress. Today in our society there are women who have become potential voices in local, national and international issues and made their presence felt in humanitarian action and resilience building and promotion and protection of human rights.”
He further said, “Let this university not be like the any other university of the State. It should be a specialized university for women. Maintain the quality of research and education along with incorporating only women-centric academic courses. We should also see how other women universities across the country are working. In this respect, we can follow SNBT Women’s University, Mumbai and look into their curriculum. The success of a university depends on the quality of students produced and the quality of research and developmental works performed by the faculty members. I believe you all will carry the shining example of an ideal university and serve the society with distinction, dedication, and devotion. I am sure our young women receiving degrees, diplomas and medals today will rise up to the expectation of their parents, teachers and their alma mater and of course the expectation of our society.”
The Governor said, “This is my earnest hope that Assam Women’s University will emerge as a knowledge hub as well as empowering centre of economic development for women.” He also congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, teaching fraternity and the entire staff for their selfless dedication to the cause of women's education in the State.
Earlier, Professor Malini Goswami, Vice-Chancellor of AWU, during her welcome address said that the university had constituted the Academic Council, the Executive Council, and the Research Council and in the last five months the first sitting of each of the councils was held. “The third meeting of the court was also convened during this period and to meet to the standard of National Education Policy, our university is continuously upgrading the curriculum in the choice-based credit system to promote flexibility and innovation,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
