LAKHIMPUR: The members of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) or SUCI (Communist) rocked Lakhimpur on Monday by staging massive protest against the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities across the State.

In support of the demand, several hundred members of the party took out a protest rally in North Lakhimpur town. By initiating the same protest programme, the party demanded the Union Government to scrap the contentious Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 which are considered to be against the interest of the farmers' community. The protesters also demanded the State Government as well as the district administration to control the increased bus fares which have been charged by buses and light passenger vehicles taking advantage of the COVID-19 and lockdown situation although they are plying with cent per cent passengers.

The protesters took out the rally from Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town and then arrived at the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO). There the protesters expressed vehement resentment against the unfair and illegal charging of exorbitant bus fares and drew the attention of the DTO regarding the issue. They submitted a memorandum to him, urging him to control the bus and other light passenger vehicle employees from charging high fares taking advantage of the situation.

Then the rally, after completing a round in North Lakhimpur town, arrived at the Deputy Commissioner's office and rocked the environment by shouting slogans to demand control of sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities and to scrap the three agriculture acts. The party submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of district and demanded strict action against the dishonest businessmen who were increasing the prices of commodities as per their whims and fancies for their profit.
