LAKHIMPUR: Bharat Ratna ‘Sudhakantha’ Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was commemorated with profound honour on Tuesday in Lakhimpur on the occasion of his eighth death anniversary. Various institutions, schools, and colleges of the district organized commemoration programme on the occasion at North Lakhimpur, Naoboicha, Laluk, Bihpuriya, Narayanpur, Dhalpur, Boginadi, Panigaon, Dhakuakhana, and Ghilamora.

On this occasion, the teachers’ unit of Lakhimpur Commerce College organized a commemoration programme in a befitting manner. It began with the lighting of the earthen lamp by senior professor Gopal Kumar Chetri and paying floral tribute to the portrait of the bard by senior professor Mahesh Chandra Bhagawati. The open session kicked off with a Bhupendra Sangeet performed in a chorus.

In the programme, veteran artiste, actor and former working president of Asom Natya Sanmilan, Nazim Ahmed and actor Arun Kumar Dutta were given a warm welcome. The teachers’ unit of the college extended a financial aid of Rs. 5,000 to Nazim Ahmed.

Professors Dr. Gunin Sarmah, Dr. Shikhamoni Borgohain, Tilak Deka and administrative staff Parama Phukan delivered speeches on the Sudhakantha commemorating his noble deeds.

Sabda and terminal magazine Charaiweti’s team commemorated the bard by organizing a programme at the Jeuti Club premises. In the programme held under the management of Sabda secretary Bubul Hazarika and Charaiweti editor Kalyani Chakraborty Gogoi, several vocal artistes, including Prabin Gogoi, Prashurya Priyam Gogoi, Bijoya Tamuli Phukan, Pranita Taid and others presented Bhupendra Sangeet while poets Mukut Gogoi, Sanjib Upadhyay, Dr. Jagadish Goswami, Pankaj Sabhapandit, Dilip Kumar Gogoi and many others recited poems in memory of the bard.
