Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika's birth anniversary celebrated across Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: The 96th birth anniversary of Asom Ratna, Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika was celebrated across Lakhimpur district on Thursday by various academic, social institutions and cultural organizations.

Lakhimpur Commerce College organized a cultural programme to mark the birth anniversary of the Bard of Brahmaputra. It began with the lighting of earthen lamp by Principal Dr. Lohit Hazarika at the portrait of the music maestro. He also delivered a lecture in this connection by throwing light on the life and works of the Sudhakantha. Then the students of the college performed songs composed by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and creative dance items based on his song to pay tribute to him.

On the other hand, the Department of Assamese, North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), in association with the Students' Union, celebrated the birth anniversary of the Asom Ratna-cum-recipient of the Bharat Ratna Award by organizing a unique programme on the Thursday evening under the management of Assistant Professor Dr. Hemanta Sarmah. The programme kick-started with lighting of ceremonial lamp by Vice-Principal Banikanta Konwar. Head of the Department of Assamese, Dr Arabinda Rajkhowa explained the objective of the programme. He also delivered speech on the ideology of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, manifested through his creations and appealed to the students to adhere to the universal humanitarian ideology of the Bard of Brahmaputra. Then the students of the college and Nrityaban performed cultural items on Bhupendra Sangeet, creative dances based on his songs.
