Superstar Boxer Shiva Thapa Meets Assam CM in Guwahati

India's ace boxer Shiva Thapa met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, Jun 4 after he returned from the Asian Boxing Championships held in Dubai. Thapa won the silver at the Championships that concluded in Dubai just a few days back.

CM Sarma congratulated Thapa for his win and offered him a cheque of Rs 3 lakh as per the State Sports Policy. State Sports Minister Bimal Bora was also present.

Thapa lost his second gold medal at the Championships after he went down fighting against Baatarsukh Chinzorig of Mongolia 3-2 in the men's 64kg final.

Thapa is one of the most successful male Indian boxers in the history of the Asian Boxing Championships. The 27-year-old from Guwahati, Assam began his Asian Boxing career with a gold medal in the 2013 Championships, followed by a bronze in 2015, a silver in 2017 and another bronze in 2019.

The Indian boxing delegation had their best-ever performance in the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships in the UAE, winning 15 medals. The 19-member Indian contingent finished the campaign with a record-breaking 15 medals, including two gold medals, five silver medals, and eight bronze medals. 

In the men's category, Sanjeet Singh (91kg) earned a gold medal to round off India's campaign on a high note. Sanjeet won a decisive 4-1 decision over Kazkhak boxer and three-time Asian champion Vassiliy Levit, who won a silver medal in the Rio Olympics. On the other hand, Pooja Rani (75kg) in the women's category won her second consecutive gold medal at the event after outpunching Uzbekistan's in-form Mavluda Movlonova. Pooja won a gold medal in the 81 kg division in 2019.

Olympic bound Amit Panghal won the silver medal after being defeated by Uzbekistan's reigning world and Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov, who won the match 2-3. 

Mary Kom (51kg), a five-time Asian Championships gold medalist, had to settle for silver. Mary Kom, a bronze medalist in the London Olympics, was defeated by Kazakhstan's two-time world champion Nazym Kyzaibay by a score of 2-3. 

Vikas Krishan (69kg) and Varinder Singh (60kg) won bronze medals in the men's event after losing their semi-final matches. 

Lalbuatsaihi (64kg) won a silver medal in her first appearance at the Championships after a 2-3 loss against Milana Safronova of Kazakhstan.

Anupama (+81kg) also won a silver medal after losing to Kazakhstan's Lazzat Kungeibayeva in another intense final, this time by a score of 2-3. 

Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Jaismine (57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (54kg), Monika (48kg), and Saweety (81kg) all won bronze medals in their respective categories.
