Supreme Court Allows Firecrackers within Decibel Level of 125db

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court, through an order, has fixed the maximum decibel limit for firecrackers at 125db and the timing of bursting firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm during the days of Diwali.

The Pollution Control Board (PCB) Assam, has directed to every district administration of the State to ensure proper implementation of the directives of the apex court regarding the use of firecrackers during the upcoming Diwali festival.

In the letter, the PCB also stated that its staff would keep monitoring the ambient air quality and noise level during the days of the festival at certain locations of Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Golaghat, Tezpur, Silchar, and Bongaigaon.

The Kamrup Metro district administration has formed teams to conduct inspections to monitor the commercial stockists and retailers of firecrackers to stop the use of firecrackers generating noise above the permissible level.

Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner, Biswajit Pegu has asked the people of Guwahati to celebrate a clean and green Diwali. He also urged the authorities of all schools to create awareness about the harm of firecrackers among their students. During the festival, teams from the excise department will work to prevent the illegal use of alcohol and narcotic items.
