GUWAHATI: The Apex Court on February 10 rejected the bail plea by the peasants' rights activist Akhil Gogoi.
A three-Judge Bench of Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Aniruddha Bose denied bail at this stage in light of the allegations against
"Cannot consider bail in light of the allegations as of now. Maybe later, you can file an application. " Justice Ramana stated.
"Let the trial proceed. Courts have started functioning now. " Justice Surya Kant observed
Earlier, the Raijor Dal stated that they will seek justice for Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) chief Akhil Gogoi before the Supreme Court (SC).
"The verdict of Gogoi is being deliberately delayed by the High Court", the party alleged.
Addressing a press conference, the party stated that on the ground of parity Akhil Gogoi should have been released as three of his co-accused were granted bail in the case.
However, he is still locked up since December 12, 2019, the party lamented.
"Government has tagged Akhil Gogoi as a Maoist based on an unauthentic statement by two approvers. They have given wrong statements to conspire against him," claimed Raijor Dal.
The party has urged the ruling Government to release Gogoi and contest against him in the forthcoming polls.
Meanwhile, Dispur Police on January 30 arrested few people from the Ganeshguri area of the city. The people had gathered near the Ganesh Mandir in Ganeshguri to stage a protest demanding unconditional release of jailed KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi.
They were planning to stage a 'Jail Bharo' agitation. Some of the protesters had come in from Nagaon, about 122 km outside Guwahati. The protesters included supporters and members of Raijor Dal, the recently launched political party whose president is Akhil Gogoi. The party was formed when Akhil Gogoi was still in jail.
Akhil Gogoi was arrested in December 2019 for allegedly inciting violence during the anti-CAA agitations across Assam. Though he was arrested by Assam Police, Gogoi's case (at least four cases were registered against him) was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
He has been granted bail in three of the four cases by the Gauhati High Court.
Interestingly, speaking to the media recently, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that Akhil Gogoi was arrested for his alleged links with Maoists and not for inciting violence during the anti-CAA protests.
