TINSUKIA: Indifferent attitude of the government towards surrendered militants has led to frustration among the inmates of designated camps and also among the ULFA cadres who joined the mainstream with the intention to lead a secure life.

In a press meet held at Tinsukia Press Club on Tuesday, Rohendra Moran alias Guli Asom, former finance secretary of the outlawed ULFA, vent his ire on certain sections of surrendered militants (SULFA), some student and youth organizations and a section of media. He said that they were opposed to any sort of illegal trade, whether coal or timber. Flanked by Diganta Moran alias Amor Asom, Brindaban Moran alias Amar Asom and others, Rohendra categorically stated that many who deserted the camps and laid down their arms thought that the government would lend a positive support for their proper rehabilitation but instead they were subjected to poor social life no better than the jungle. With commission and syndicate raj prevailing in every sector, the government, police and lawmakers have turned a blind eye to solving the most burning problem of the decade, he lamented. Reacting to a media report about his involvement in the recent Kola Kachu controversy, Guli Asom denied his involvement saying that the news report was false and fabricated.

Rohendra Moran further revealed that several militants in ULFA camps were ready to desert the Myanmar camps due to the autocratic nature of few higher-ups and wished to join the mainstream. Soon many cadres would be surrendering before the police, he added. In the backdrop of these positive developments, Moran said that the government should formulate effective schemes to facilitate sustainable income for them else they would become a burden to the society as well as family members.
