TINSUKIA: A suspected ULFA (I) linkman was injured in a crossfire between security forces and ULFA(I) militant in wee hours of Wednesday while security forces, based on secret information, apprehended 4 persons from Pengeree in Tinsukia district on Tuesday night.

According to Superintendent of Police Tinsukia Abhijit Gurav, the 4 persons had confessed to providing food for 7 ULFA cadres sheltering inside Upper Dehing Reserve Forest area on Monday night. The police launched another operation with one of the apprehended persons Amit Mukhiar (29) son of Lt Suresh Mukhiar of Garha line Khatangpani during the wee hours of Wednesday to locate the place where they had cooked food for the ULFA cadres, said the SP adding that around 4:50 am some unknown insurgents fired at the police team led by SDPO Margharita.

Police team retaliated in the direction of fire. Around 15-20 rounds were fired by the police team. In the cross fire, the suspected ULFA OGW Amit Mukhiar who was leading the team was hit by a stray bullet. He was immediately taken to Digboi FRU and from there he was referred to Tinsukia Civil Hospital. Suspected group of ULFA cadres ran away from the area taking advantage of thick foliage and darkness. Some incriminating objects were recovered during search which included 1 back pack, 3 PEK tube, detonators, 2 grenades and cordex. Nearby OCs and security forces were alerted about presence of the ULFA cadres in the area. Further search of the area is going on, said Gurav. Meanwhile, ULFA (I) in a press release refuted the claim of police and denied the presence of its cadres in Upper Dihing Reserve Forest.
