DHUBRI: Thousands of Sikh devotees across the country and abroad took part in Nagar Kirtan (town procession) with chanting hymns of Guru Granth Sahib as part of the three-day celebration of the 344th Swahidi Diwas (martyrdom day) of Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji on Saturday.

Gurudwara sources said that nearly 50,000 devotees, who had been arriving since the past two days from across the country and abroad, thronged the Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahibji Gurudwara here to take part in the three-day programme that got underway on Friday.

Various social service activities, including distribution of blankets among the poorest of poor, distribution of fruits among patients admitted in hospitals and other charity works were done on the first day of the programme.

Secretary of Sikh Pratinidhi Board, Eastern Zone, Kulwant Singh told The Sentinel that they were very keen on going for more social welfare activities in the years to come.

“We celebrate the Swahidi Divas of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib Ji, the ninth Guru of Sikh religion, He stayed here between 1662-65 and founded the Gurudwara. The celebration is very sacred to us. Sikh people across the country and abroad come to participate in the rituals, including Nagar Kirtan, which we took out in Dhubri town on Saturday,” Singh added.

He said that the three-day celebration, which began with Prabhat pheri, would conclude with Bhog Sri Akhand Path and Kirtan Dewan on Sunday.

Prominent citizens of Dhubri town were also felicitated by the Sikh Prtinidhi Board Eastern Zone at the Darbar on Saturday. A cross-section of people, besides offering prayers in the Gurudwara, visited the fair which was held along with the celebration of Swahidi Divas in Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua Maidan here.

An NFR special train between Dibrugarh to Dhubri has been started for the convenience of the pilgrims of the north-eastern region, a Gurudwara source said.

Members of Dhubri Kalibari Trustee Board and various other organizations served the participants in Nagar Kirtan with light refreshments while the e-rickshaw association swept the roads with the broom in the morning.
