LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district committee of Tai Ahom Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, Asom expressed strong resentment against the Lakhimpur Divisional Forest Office regarding the deforestation caused by illegal sawmills active in the district. The organization alleged that the owners of the illegal saw mills had been unabatedly destroying the district forest by mercilessly cutting valuable trees.
In a press release sent to the media, Joyjyoti Gogoi, the Lakhimpur unit president of the Tai Ahom Yuba Chatra Sanmilan, stated that most of the Shimalu trees of the forest areas had been cut due to the illegal sawmills. “As a result of it, vulture species of birds are facing extinction because these birds build their nests on the Shimalu trees. Simultaneously, the cutting of the trees has tremendously contributed to the increase in global warming, thereby affecting the eco-system,” the press release stated.
Further, the president of the organization alleged that planks of the Shimalu tree had been rampantly transported to various parts of the district from Balighat, Adisuti, and Aserakota of the district. Under such circumstances, the president of the organization condemned the Lakhimpur Divisional Forest office for not initiating any steps against these timber smugglers. He demanded the office concerned to stop the illegal deforestation activities and to take action against the illegal sawmills or to face massive protest programme.
