TANGLA: Remembering the martyrs of the Assam Movement on the eve of the completion of 33 years of the historic Assam Accord, the Tangla AASU paid its tribute to the 855 martyrs of the movement at the Tangla Swahid Bhavan at Tangla in Udalguri on Tuesday evening. The programme was initiated by Tangla AASU president Pranjal Deka and general secretary Rinku Deka. The student body lit 33 earthen lamps to mark the 33 years of the Accord and paid homage to the martyrs of the movement. The Accord was signed on August 15, 1985.
Assistant general secretary of AASU, Jayanta Kumar Bhattacharjya said the AASU would continue to fight for total implementation of the Assam Accord. “Many of the main clauses, including Indo-Bangladesh border sealing, detection and deportation of the illegal migrants and deletion of their names from the voters’ list, constitutional and economic safeguard for the indigenous people of Assam, protection of land of tribal blocks and belts, xatras and several other provisions still await implementation,” he added. He exhorted the government to implement the clauses of the Assam Accord and honour the rare sacrifice of the martyrs.
