Tarun Gogoi holds Sonowal Govt responsible for misery due to flood in Assam

Guwahati: 3-time former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, firing salvoes at the current BJP Government headed by Sarbananda Sonowal, stated that it is primarily to blame for the flood miseries in Assam.

"The Assam flood and erosion situation has driven lakhs homeless and farmlands have been inundated causing immense grief to the people. Livestock have been washed away and lakhs have been hit by grief. It is because the Assam Government and the Water Resource department have not repaired the embankments on time and they have also been unable to implement the schemes meant to mitigate the flood-related issues in the state", Gogoi pointed out.

Gogoi further alleged that the Government even has failed to implement schemes after taking loans from NABARD. "A few contractors prospered after these deals were inked, but lakhs now find themselves staring at stark misfortune. The Assam Government and the Water Resources Government are responsible for the flood problem in Assam. Although the CM asked the building of embankments to be built on time not once but several times, the directives were not taken seriously by concerned officials", Gogoi rued.

Gogoi further added that the Government has not taken any action against the officials who have failed to implement the measures required to ameliorate the issues. Inviting Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to take stock of the flood situation in Assam, Gogoi urged the Government assigned bodies to resolve the issue through action instead of being inanimate.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam has worsened as more areas have been inundated, affecting nearly 28 lakh people in 26 districts across the state The floods claimed two more lives on Friday, taking the state death toll to 95, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) -- both persons died from drowning.

The 26 districts that have been severely affected due to the floods include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, West Karbi Anglong and Cachar.

A total of 2,577 villages under 73 revenue circles in the flood-hit districts are currently inundated and 48,163 people have taken shelter at 295 relief camps set up by the administration in the flood-affected districts. Meanwhile, the water levels of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries are gradually increasing and are flowing above the 'danger-level' mark in several areas across Assam.
