LAKHIMPUR: In addition to the extensive agitation programmes initiated by All Assam Students’ Union against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Lakhimpur district was rocked with many other protest programmes on Tuesday initiated by several organizations with the demand for the scrapping of the contentious Bill.

The Lakhimpur district units of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Asom (TAYPA) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) jointly staged railway blockade in Lakhimpur demanding the scrapping of the CAB. The activists of the organizations, led by TAYPA Lakhimpur district unit president Ajit Burhagohain and AJYP Lakhimpur unit general secretary, blocked the Guwahati-Murkongselek Express (Upper) for more than an hour at North Lakhimpur Station on Tuesday in support of their demand and strongly opposed the CAB. Both the organizations extended full support to the bandh called by NESO on the day against the issue.

On the other hand, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Sangrami Parishad (AJSP) initiated protest rally in North Lakhimpur town opposing the controversial Bill. The protesters shouted slogans against the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Union and State governments, slamming BJP for their vested politics to grant citizenship to a certain section of foreigners on the basis of religion.
