HAMREN: Few months after the untoward incident in the border region of Assam and Meghalaya that led to the stoppage of all vehicle movement between the two districts, a fresh incident in the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam next to the Meghalaya border has created a heated situation in the state.

The situation is said to have started when a group of people belonging to the Khasi community from the neighbouring state of Meghalaya entered the district and vandalised local property. The incident reportedly took place in the town of Hamren, a picturesque town located in the West Karbi Anglong District of Assam.

The miscreants allegedly barged into a tea garden in the town and destroyed the tea plantations in the garden. They also vandalised other property in the locality including an outpost in the tea garden campus which was set on fire by the miscreants from the neighbouring state.

When the locals rushed to the spot to prevent any more damage, the group of miscreants reportedly attacked them and fled into Meghalaya. Two local residents reportedly sustained injuries in the incident and had to be rushed to Hojai for medical care.

Local people as well as forest officials have complained multiple times regarding the miscreants from the Meghalaya side coming into Assam and causing damages, specially to the forest resources of Assam. Illegally felled timbre was also captured several times by the officials. But no concrete steps have been taken by the state governments to completely prevent such incidents from happening.

Although both the state governments of Assam and Meghalaya under Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma respectively have been announcing that steps have been taken and the border issues are being resolved to a great length, these isolated incidents that happen from time to time present a completely opposite picture of the situation.
